HGM was engaged to undertake slope erosion mitigation works at Cave Terrace in Redcliffs, delivering a long-term stabilisation solution for a steep, erosion-prone hillside within a constrained residential environment.
Scope of Works
HGM’s scope of work included:
- Vegetation removal and site preparation.
- Excavation and re-profiling of the slope to create a consistent surface profile.
- Installation of T-RECs turf reinforcement matting across the prepared slope.
- Hydroseeding of the entire slope to establish permanent vegetation cover.
- Ongoing maintenance and monitoring of the newly established vegetation for 12 months following completion.
Project Challenges
One of the project’s key challenges was undertaking the works while maintaining a live traffic lane throughout construction, a requirement set by the client. The combination of a steep slope, narrow road corridor, and residential surroundings demanded detailed planning and a carefully managed construction methodology.
Applying Safety in Design principles, HGM developed a solution that created a safe working corridor along the road. This provided sufficient space to safely operate an 25 ton excavator while protecting both the workforce and the public, and preventing excavated material from spilling into the live traffic lane.
Working in partnership with our traffic management sub contractor, HGM implemented a comprehensive traffic management plan that safely reduced the road to a single downhill traffic lane for the duration of the works. This approach maintained public access while allowing construction activities to proceed safely and efficiently.
Due to the steep terrain, HGM utilised specialist rope access techniques to safely access the slope and install the Tuff Reinforcement matting, ensuring complete coverage while maintaining a high standard of workmanship in difficult conditions.
Environmental management was a major focus throughout the project due to the site’s residential location and the potential for sediment runoff. HGM implemented a range of erosion and sediment control measures, including:
- Installation of sump liners and Silt logs to prevent sediment entering the stormwater network.
- Continuous dust suppression through controlled water application during excavation when required..
- Daily removal of excavated material from site.
- Regular road sweeping to prevent sediment build-up and maintain a clean, safe roadway.
Project Outcome
The final stage of the project involved applying hydroseed across the prepared slope.
Following completion, HGM continued to monitor the site and water the newly seeded slope for 12 months to promote healthy vegetation establishment and ensure the long-term success of the erosion control measures.
The Cave Terrace project was delivered on programme, within budget, and with zero safety or environmental incidents. The successful outcome demonstrates HGM Construction’s ability to deliver technically challenging slope stabilisation and erosion control projects through innovative planning, specialist access techniques, and a strong commitment to safety, environmental management, and quality workmanship.
