HGM Construction started the same way many good things do – with a bit of grit and a big idea.

More than 20 years ago, Hamish Murrell bought a small excavator and started taking on jobs in the evenings and weekends while working full-time. One job led to another, relationships formed, and before long HGM was officially up and running.

What began with one machine and a determination to do things better has grown into a well known, respected and trusted construction company delivering complex projects across Canterbury and the wider South Island.

With 17+  experienced staff and a large diverse fleet of late model, specialised plant and equipment, HGM is well equipped to deliver projects of any size and scale.

FOUNDER | CEO

HAMISH MURRELL

Hamish founded HGM Construction in 2006 at the age of 19. With 4 years in the industry already under his belt, he recognised an opportunity to deliver more practical, simple, yet innovative solutions to some of the toughest civil construction challenges.

25 years on, Hamish’s passion for the industry remains as strong as ever. What he loves most is the variety of work, the epic places construction has taken him to and the incredible people he has had the opportunity to meet along the way. Building lasting relationships while delivering meaningful projects is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

A huge highlight has been HGM reaching its 20th anniversary in business. Hamish enjoys taking projects from the initial enquiry/ request for tender through to planning and execution and delivering a high quality finished product to our clients.

Outside of work, Hamish (aka the Big Cheese) enjoys spending time with his wife, Katy and two children tackling projects around the house and traveling.

Joseph has a reputation for solving problems others can’t. A natural “ fix- it” person, he is a qualified Engineer, skilled in fabrication, machinery maintenance and keeping the fleet operating at peak performance.

He got in to engineering to learn how to weld and pickup practical skills that can be used both in and outside of work and found HGM to be a great place to expand on these skills and develop new ones. He thrives on using a practical, hands on approach to keep the wheels turning and get the job done. He also enjoys the variety the role offers and the split between time on site and time in the workshop.

Outside of work he enjoys getting out in the garden, going tramping and making coffee at home.
